Lemnos is a great place to visit for enthusiasts of birdwatching! Pink flamingos, white swans, egrets, partridges and kestrels can all be found on the island. As a popular stopover, resting ground and also wintering haven for dozens of species of migratory birds, Lemnos is an wonderful choice for seeing some truly rare and exotic bird species. The island’s temperate climate and unspoilt landscapes make Lemnos a place of vibrant biodiversity, a true paradise for those who are passionate about birds. What’s more, all you need to enjoy observing the birds is a pair of binoculars, a camera, and your love for nature! The wetland habitat of ‘Chortarolimni’ is a salt lake with a total area of about 18,000 acres. It is part of the Natura 2000 network, making it a top destination for birdwatchers. Here you can find more than 30 migratory and endemic species of birds such as egrets, herons, kestrels, partridges and flamingos. They can all be admired from the purpose-built bird observatories which are easily accessible by road. Lemnos is home to other important wetlands scattered about the island: the Moudros bay, the airport area (next to Varos village), as well as the Old and New Pedino. In addition to the wetlands, you can even find rare birds in residential areas. The villages of Roussopouli, Repanidi, Kontopouli and Calliope are all between 3 and 12 km from the hotel (maximum 10 minutes driving), where you will find kestrels, living close to people, and nesting in the tiles of the village houses. The Environmental Information Centre is housed in the old village primary school of Calliope village, and is an important source of information regarding the island’s natural wealth.
